The Basics of Education

To properly discuss the basics of education, the concept of education must be properly explored and understood. According to the dictionary education is the process of giving and receiving systematic instruction especially at a school or university. Another calls it an enlightening experience. Education is basically facilitating learning, acquiring knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits.
In this blog we are going to be considering the different forms of education

  • Formal Education (Within a structured environment) i.e Preschool, Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Vocational and Special Education.
  • Informal Education i.e Montessori, Self learning, Homeschooling, Indigenous, Electronic Educational Technology.
  I want us to consider the following questions;
  • What really is the essence of education?
  • In a classroom full of students, is it possible that they all have the same interests, characters and level of intelligence?
  • Should they be taught the same content areas and taught in the same manner?
  • Why are there very few Nigerian inventors and why are the few people who schooled abroad?
  • What is the relationship between the Nigerian educational system, unemployment and poverty?
I would really appreciate your feedback and comments. Thank you.

  12. About Education, Like the saying goes" you don't judge a fish by its inability to swim" , No two students are the same, what works for one may not work for the other, but in our country they force us to be like other kids, they make us normal, kill our creative analytical thinking ability , They make us ROBOT'S,

    1. Very unfortunate but true. Teachers who did that in the past and who still have that approach to teaching do not know any better. That is one of the reasons this platform was created in the first place. Thank you Afra

  13. 1. What is the essence of education?

The essence of education from my understanding is simply learning (i.e to teach, and/or be taught), & properly too.

    2. In a classroom full of students, is it possible that they all have the same interests, characters and level of intelligence?

No, it is not. There's always the case where students A & B have the same level of intelligence but different interests, while C & D have the same interests but different characters & levels of intelligence, or where E & F require some inspiration to determine what their 1, 2 & 3 are. This applies to every student "in a classroom full of students", and beyond. (I hope this summary helps explain my short answer)

    3. Should they be taught the same content areas and taught in the same manner?

Well, for this i will say that it is very necessary for the "teacher" or "educator" to take the time to properly identify & understand the student's "personal features", & in turn help them discover, identify, understand & enhance these "features" before deciding on what content areas and manner is needed/recommended in the "administering" of learning. The content areas & manner of this administration (learning) shouldn't always be specific, in order not to limit the scope of learning (though within healthy intelligence/intellectual boundaries).

    4. Why are there very few Nigerian inventors and why are the few people who schooled abroad?

It is no surprise that i find this question being asked again, as it has been on for ages.
Now, our educational standard has since lost its bearing or - should i say - its compass with which it was/is supposed to help navigate the young limitless minds of those who could have been inventors.
So, back to the question, we have very few inventors because we do not have a credible support system/standard (educational and otherwise). I do believe there's still a chance to retrace our steps & navigate back on course, even though the sacrifices will be great...but not greater than the end result.

    5. What is the relationship between the Nigerian educational system, unemployment and poverty?

This question usually takes a lot of time to answer, not to mention the arguments & quarrel that often comes with it (i.e backed by the anger and conflict of interest it brews). So, i'll simply just say refer to keywords or keylines from answers 1 - 4. Thanks

I honestly look forward to participating in the intellectual exchange that this blog and its subscribers bring to the table and also contribute to the generation of long term solutions for better learning, for us and our future generations.

    GOD continually increase you.

    2. It's The LORD'S doing, Sir. All thanks to HIM for HIS gifts.

...but still, i maintain that just talking about it isn't gonna do much save we act, and timely too. So, let us keep teaching, making aware & enlightening as many as can be; that there be effective resolutions over time and for the long term.

      Thanks
